Remembering H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II:
The Third Catholicos of the East

January 3rd marks the memorial of H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II, The Third Catholicos of the East. (6 June 1874 - 3 Jan 1964) Through prayer and fasting he received strength from God to lead his people for long years, courageously, inspiring his people to work for their church and for the glory of God. Following the peace pact of 1958, he had the good fortune to guide the destiny of the unified Malankara Church. The deep spirituality and wisdom of this Catholicos earned him the title 'Valiya Bava', or 'The Great Catholicos'.

H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II, the third Catholicos of the East was a great guiding light in the life of H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews II, the sixth Catholicos of the East. Valiya bava was instrumental in finding able people and provided leadership and advices to them to take on the line of service to the Lord and build a strong church leadership. H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews II remembers the words of Valiya bava as he prepared for accepting priesthood and talks about the prayer life of Valiya bava.

H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II: Seeing an Episcopa in Pampady thirumeni

In spite of the reluctance of Kuriakose Rembachen to become an Episcopa, H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II, the then Catholicos saw the need of the services of Kuriakose Rembachen as an Episcopa and was able to convince Rembachen to step up to the need. On February 16, 1929 H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II, along with Vattaseril thirumeni and Mar Ivanios thiurmeni consecrated Kuriakose Rembachen as an Episcopa.

Mar Elia Cathedral: Witnessing the consecration of H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II as the third Catholicose of the East

H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II was consecrated as the third Catholicose of the East at Mar Elia Cathedral, Kottayam on February 15, 1929. Mar Elia Cathedral was the result of a offering by St. Gregorios of Parumala to commemorate the miraculous escape of the saint from tempestuous seas through the intercessions of Mar Elia and was build by Mar Joseph Dionysius Pulikottil II, the Malankara Metropolitan.
